To use Office for Mac in your organization, it needs to be activated. How you activate Office for Mac depends on whether your organization has a Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) plan or has a volume license agreement. But in both cases your users won't have to enter any product keys.

To activate a volume licensed version of Office for Mac, such as Office LTSC for Mac 2021 or Office 2019 for Mac, use the Volume License (VL) Serializer. You can download the VL Serializer by signing into the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). You run the VL Serializer on each device. By doing this, your Mac users won't see any activation prompts when they first open their copy of Office.

Hello! We are a VAR and a MSP and wanted to know if someone can help us source a VL Serializer from the VLSC to help us activate a Microsoft Office 2019 Home and Business license for MAC. We have a client that added the license to their office account, but the license doesn't show up. Seems to be a fairly common issue as mentioned here: -us/msoffice/forum/all/office-2019-activation-mac/abacd427-a8d7-4f86-b19f-cf809144d883 and after doing some digging we found that we needed the serializer but the person on the Microsoft forum has since then removed the file. We don't have access to the VLSC at the moment under our organization. Any help would be appreciated!

However, the Office 2019 product is only available now for Microsoft's volume licensing customers. "Volume licensing" applies to organizations that license the software for five or more end users. Consumers right now don't have access to Office 2019, although the product is expected to become available "in the next few weeks," according to an announcement by Jared Spataro, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Office and Windows marketing.

However, organizations using Office 2019 will only be able to deploy it using Microsoft's click-to-run (C2R) streaming technology. Microsoft won't provide MSI installation files as in the past. The C2R technology supports "volume activation, Group Policy management, administrative control over updates, and integration with management tools such as System Center Configuration Manager," according to Microsoft's documentation. Spataro also suggested that using C2R technology will make it easier to perform in-place upgrades to Office 2019:

Office 2021, which Microsoft will aim at consumers and very small businesses, is slated to launch Tuesday, Oct. 5. Last month, Microsoft debuted Office LTSC 2021, the acronym standing for "Long-Term Support Channel," as the perpetual-license Office for commercial and government customers. Unlike Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021 is not sold retail but is available only through volume licensing.

The new Office comes in two SKUs: Office Home and Student 2021 and Office Home and Business 2021. The former includes Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Teams and Word; the latter adds Outlook to the mix. By Microsoft's licensing terms, only Home and Business can be used for business purposes. Each SKU comes in editions for either Windows (Windows 10 or 11) or macOS (the three most-recent versions) and can be run on only one device.
